Avatar: The Way of Water has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time!
With a global box office total of $2.075 billion, the Avatar sequel is now fourth, trailing only James Cameron's Titanic, which is third with $2.187 billion.
The Way of Water, on the other hand, still has a long way to go to overtake second place Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion) and Cameron's first Avatar film, which is number one with $2.92 billion.
The film success has not been only about box office as the film has also been nominated for Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Sound at this year's 95th Academy Awards.
Avatar: The Way of Water has become a massive success since its release over a month ago (Dec 16), and it is now the fourth highest-grossing film in history.
According to Variety, the film has earned $2.075 billion worldwide, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens' 2015 box office total of $2.071 billion. It is only the sixth film to gross more than $2 billion worldwide.
The highest-grossing film is Avatar, which was released in 2009 and grossed $2.92 billion. Avengers: Endgame, which was released in 2019, comes in second with $2.79 billion.
Titanic, a 1997 romantic drama, comes in third place with $2.19 billion, and Avatar: The Way of Water, the 2022 sequel to Avatar (2009), comes in fourth place with $2.07 billion.
Avatar: The Way of Water is currently in fourth place and attempting to climb to third. It is about $120 million short of overtaking Titanic's current third-place position.
