Germany beat Costa Rica by 4-2 scoreline in their last group stage game but still got knocked-out from FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

In Group E's other game, Japan managed to beat Spain 2-1 to ensure their last-16 qualification as table topper. Spain qualified as the second team from Group E.

While Germany had to win against Costa Rica to give themselves a chance at round of 16 qualification, they needed Spain to remain unbeaten against Japan.

This is second time in the row that Germany has crashed out of FIFA World Cup in the group stage. They also got knocked out early in Russia 2018.

At one point, Costa Rica had taken the lead vs Germany and were momentarily second in Group E table as both giants Spain and Germany were headed out.

However, Costa Rica's dreams were shattered as substitute Kai Havertz scored twice as Fullkurg's late goal secured the meaningless 3 points for Germany.
