Argentina are through to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Quarter-finals after beating Australia in their last-16 game.

Messi scored the opening goal of the game as Alvarez extended Argentina's lead from a Australian goalkeeper error. There was an own Argentina goal but the game closed 2-1 in favor of Argentina.

With his 9th goal in 23 appearances for Argentina in FIFA World Cup, Messi surpassed Maradona who has 8 goals in 21 games at World Cups.

Messi became the second-highest goal scorer for Argentina only behind Gabriel Batistuta who has 10 goals in FIFA World Cups.

This was Messi's 789th career goal as he completed 1000th match in his professional career.

The goal vs Australia in last-16 game was also Messi's first goal in the knock-out rounds of FIFA football World Cup. This is Mess's 5th World Cup participation.
