The Washington Post to layoff staff from multiple departments as well as close its gaming vertical, Launcher, which started in 2019, according to the spokesperson.
The Washington Post announced a major shakeup on Tuesday, with 20 roles being cut in a move that publisher Fred Ryan had foreshadowed last month to happen in early 2023.
In a memo to employees, Executive Editor of The Post Sally Buzbee expressed deep regret in having to make the difficult decision to cut jobs from the newspaper.
Sally Buzbee wrote in the memo, “While such changes are not easy, evolution is necessary for us to stay competitive, and the economic climate has guided our decision to act now."
Just days after Jeff Bezos, the owner of The Post, visited the newsroom and held meetings with Ryan and Buzbee, the news of job cut becomes a reality.
The Post has emphasized that staff affected by the layoffs would be offered severance and support in their quest for new jobs.
Recently, news industry has been rocked by layoffs from some of the world's largest news organizations, including CNN, NBC News, MSNBC, Vox Media, and Gannett, looking for ways to cut costs.
