The year 2023 has turned out to be a great year for Indian box office, both in domestic and international markets. The year started with a bang when Bollywood’s King Khan’s comeback movie ‘Pathaan’, also starring Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, took an earth shattering opening worldwide breaking all previous Bollywood records.
The movie became Shah Rukh Khan’s first 1000 crore grosser (Indian rupees). It looked like that the records set by ‘Pathaan’, part of Yash Raj Films ambitious ‘Spy-Universe’, would be hard to break but Shah Rukh Khan’s own ‘Jawan’ releasing on September 7th, sets new records becoming the biggest Indian hit of the year with over 1150 crore gross globally.
Top 5 Indian Grossers in Overseas in 2023
‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’ became huge hit in overseas. It looks certain that Shah Rukh Khan is set to finish the year with his films setting comfortably at the top of the charts despite him having a 3rd release on Christmas; ‘Dunki’ directed by ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ fame Rajkumar Hirani.
Prabhas ‘Salaar’, directed by Prashant Neel also looked an contender to become the highest-grosser of the year but the clash with ‘Dunki’ has dented the chances for both films.

Shah Rukh Khan Dominates Overseas Box Office
Shah Rukh Khan’s films have dominated the overseas box office in 2023, with his two releases, Pathaan and Jawan, taking the top two spots.
Pathaan, which released on January 25, 2023, has grossed over $49 million overseas, making it the highest-grossing Indian film of the year in the overseas market.
Jawan, which was first slated to release on June 2, 2023, has grossed over $48 million overseas, making it the second-highest-grossing Indian film of all time in the overseas market.
The two movies led by Shah Rukh Khan comfortably lead over other Indian releases.
Animal, Leo and Jailer Complete the Top 5
The other films that made the top five list of overseas grossers in 2023 are Animal, Leo, and Jailer. Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, grossed over $29 million overseas.
Leo, led by Thalapathy Vijay, grossed over $24 million overseas. Jailer, Rajinikanth’s comeback blockbuster, grossed over $23 million overseas.
It will be interesting to see if ‘Salaar Ceasfire’ and ‘Dunki’, released this week to cash on Christmas and New Year holidays, make it to the top 5 list. Stay tuned.
