Coach Alonso Breaks Record as Leverkusen Win Eighth Straight Beating Freiburg 2-1

Bayer Leverkusen defeated Freiburg 2-1 in a thrilling Bundesliga match on Sunday, October 29, 2023.

The win was Leverkusen’s eighth consecutive victory in all competitions and moved them to the top of the Bundesliga table.

Xabi Alonso has made an incredible impact on Bayer Leverkusen since taking over as manager as the club has won 12 of their first 13 games this season, scoring 46 goals and conceding just 10.

Alonso has transformed Leverkusen into a dynamic and attacking team, playing with a high press and a possession-based style. They have also kept five clean sheets. He has also gotten the best out of his players, including Jonas Hofmann, Alejandro Grimaldo, and Florian Wirtz, who have all become key members of the team under his leadership.

According to Opta, Xabi Alonso has become the first Leverkusen manager to win eight consecutive competitive matches since the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 1979. This breaks the previous club record of seven wins, which was set by Klaus Toppmöller in the 2001-02 season and matched by Alonso himself last season.

Leverkusen are currently top of the Bundesliga 23/24 table with 25 points in 9 matches played. Bayern Munich are chasing with 23 points in 9 games.

Leverkusen have scored 27 goals in the league, only behind Bayern Munich’s 34 scored. They have conceded only 8 goals in Bundesliga, also second best defense behind Bayern Munich.

Victor Okoh Boniface is the leading goal-scorer of the club this season with 7 goals. Hofmann has scored 5 and Grimaldo with 3 goals so far. Midfielder Frimpong leads the assist chart with 5.
